ROCKCLIFFE CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Art and Design

At Rockcliffe CE School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. Art and design embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. Our high-quality art and design education engages, inspire and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As our pupils progress, they develop the skills to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

Our teaching is based on the National Curriculum and is both linked to topics and also taught discretely to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject. The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children's learning. All pupils should:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. Children in Foundation Stage are assessed within the aspect of Expressive Arts and Design.

We are proud of our Art Work!

In the first half of Autumn, Mrs Pieroni (Art Subject Leader) joined year 4 to support Mrs Batey with an amazing idea!  What started with a short conversation in the staffroom ended up with some fantastic mod roc Tutankhamun masks that took pride of place in the school hall.
Children worked on a variety of skills from initial sketches to watercolour paints to sculpting with mod roc and they had a fabulous time! They really developed their skills as artists!
