Autumn 2023

11th September 2023

Welcome back year 4/5! We have had such a busy week settling back into school. We began reading our class book- 'A Series of Unfortunate events' this week and began writing some fantastic character descriptions. These weren't just any character descriptions, the children described the children through their actions instead of explicitly using adjectives. Then we created a super class display doing some art. We drew self portraits and shared information about our favourite things round the outside of the picture. I hope this continues throughout the whole year.

This week in PE, we played some team building games which helped us to work together as a class. We will be applying this to our team sports (netball and football) this half term. I think a firm favourite with year 4/5 was pass the frog! In geography this half term we have been learning about mountains. This week, we have been identifying key features of mountains. In RE, we have been learning all about the different books of the bible.

We have been super busy this week, continuing our work on our class book. We have described the Beaudelaire children and have been writing a setting description using a motif (ask one of us what this means). They wrote some fantastic setting descriptions for Count Olaf's house, they gave Miss Scotson the creeps. In music this half term, we have been learning a rock classic 'Living on a Prayer' by Bon Jovi. The children love singing this song and have been learning how to support the powerful sound by using our diaphragm.

Computing is a firm favourite lesson amongst the children in year 4/5. This half term in computing, we have been creating vector drawings. We have been learning how to layer, group and manipulate images to create a logo or picture. In maths, we have moved on to addition and subtraction. The children have loved using the 'doorstep column method' to add and subtract, they have even been applying these skills to some tricky word problems.

This week, we got to opportunity to work with a local, Cumbrian artist to work together to create a whole school art project. We have been looking at nature and leaves to create some art work this half term so it was great to do something that linked to this with a local artist. In English, we have been writing diary entries. We wrote one as a class in groups which was good fun as we had to all get into character to allow cohesion throughout our writing
