This week, year 4/5 dove into an art unit on Chila Kumari Burman (a Punjabi Liverpudlian pop artist). The children researched her and her life, created a collage to present their findings in the style of Kumari Burman, made a collage to reflect their own lives and personalities and concluded this with some origami- making their own ice cream sculptures.

We have been back to normal lessons this week and have immersed ourselves into our new book- The Boy at the Back of the Class. We have been playing detective using inference skills to see what we can find out about the characters within the story. In History, we have started learning about the HMT Empire Windrush. We looked at some historical sorces relating to this time period to see what we would find out about the lifestyle of the passengers before they boarded the ship. In maths, we have started looking at formal methods of multiplication. Year 4 multiplying 3 digits by 2 digits and year 5 multiplying 4 digit by 2 digits..... safe to say some of our answers have been pretty large. In spelling this week, the children have been looking at the 'ie' and 'ei' digraph and categorising words with this in into different sections. They came up with so many creative ways to sort the words into sub catagories.

Year 4 and 5 have been exploring thier musical talents this half term as we have had a visitor from Carlisle Cathedral in to teach us some songs. This is in preperation for a concert with 3 other choirs in March. The children have enjoyed starting to learn hits from the shows such as; The Greatest Showman, Wicked and Joseph and his Amazing Techinicoloured Dream Coat.

In RE this week we have been learning about different parables and stories that Jesus told. We have been looking at the moral of each one and how Christians can apply this to their lives today.

In Science this half term year 5 are learning about forces. We looked at the forces gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction. We have discovered that forces are a push or a pull. We learned all about Isaac Newton and how he discovered gravity by observing an apple falling from a tree at his home.

This week, year 5 have been investigating the force air resistance in their Science lessons. They tested 3 parachutes of different sizes and measured how long it took for them to fall to the ground. The children discovered that the larger the surface area, the longer the parachure took to fall to the ground. This meant that there was more air resistance to work in opposition to gravity.
