Spring 2024

Happy New Year

Welcome back, everyone!

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and New Year. This term, we have a few changes. Miss Bingham is on teaching placement in Miss Bell's class and we have a student teacher, Mrs Mace, in our class too. As a result, Miss Bell will also be teaching our class on some afternoons (or she will be supervising Mrs Mace).

PE with Nick will continue on Mondays.

The hard work continues as we approach the SATS and booster club will begin a few weeks after Christmas.

Spring 1 - The Elizabethans

This term, we will learn about Queen Elizabeth I and her achievements. We hope to visit Tullie House where we will learn more about life for Tudors in Carlisle as well as take a tour of the city to see the remaining Tudor buildings and learn more about the history of the city at that time.

Linking to the Elizabethans, we will be studying Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. We will use the text as a basis for wriitng humorous story openers and also take the opportunity to write some playscripts. Last year, we wrote soem fantastic poetic monologues in the style of Shakespeare so I am looking forward to reading those once they are written.

Week 2

This half term we have been developing our skills in hockey, manoeuvring with skill, attacking, defending and assisting our team meets for the benefit of the team.

In History, we have been considering the Tudors' place in time among other key historical events and eras. Here, the children have created an action for each event to help us rememebr their chronological order. Can you guess any of the events from the actions?

In pairs, we also created timelines that ordered significant events in the life of Elizabeth I chronologically.

Week 4

This half term, Year Six have been planning and producing sections of a three course meal. We have researched the recipes, thought about where our ingredients come from and bought the supplies. We have used a variety of techniques to prepare and cook to make an end product. We then sampled and rated each recipe. This week we made our starters: steak and pepper kebabs; houmous served with a greek salad; and stuffed peppers (that didn't actually get stuffed). I'm sure you agree that they all look fantastic.

Whilst the 'Starter' groups were working on their meals, one group was researching the journey of a salmon from farm to fork and the other group were creatijng a recipe for a class book.

Week 5

This week, it was the chance for the 'Mains' group to make their meal. Their key ingredient was salmon. Whilst they were working hard on their masterpieces, the dessert group was researching how the pineapple makes it way from the farm to our tables and the starter group were creating a page for our recipe books.

After studying Romeo and Juliet for the last half term, we brought out our inner Shapespeare and wrote poetic monologues from the perspective of Friar Lawrence. We tried to include a range of modal verbs and powerful vocabulary in order to affect the audience.

Spring 2 - North America

This term our topic is North America. Firstly, we will use atlases to label the countries on a map of North America. We will look at a range of phyical and human geographocal features from the continent and the different climates that can be found there. We will research some countries and write a non-chronological report about a capital city of our choice. Using our Excel skills, we will create pie charts and tables to show various statistics about each city. We will then use this information to compare London to these cities. We will learn about the time zones and how to calculate time differences.

In Science with Mrs Mace, we will learn about the properties of different materials and how we can use this knowledge to solve problems. We will look at the use of evaporation, sieving and filtering as a way to separate mixtures or different solutions.

In English, we will using the book Wonder to write character descriptions. Here we will use inference to help a reader understand the appearance and personality of each character.. We will also use this as an opportunitiy to challenge people's opinions on disabilities and differences.

Week 1

For the first few days of the new half term, we have completed our lessons around the life and times of the Elizabethan people. We looked at aspects of their lives such as homes, jobs and leisure activities. We looked for similarities and differences between the lives of the rich and the poor and presented our new-found knowledge with the class.

Week 2

This week, it was the chance for the 'Deserts' group to make their meal. Their key ingredient was pineapple. Whilst they were working hard on their masterpieces, the 'Starters' group was researching how the pineapple makes it way from the farm to our tables and the 'Mains' group were creating a page for our recipe books
