Summer 2023
Welcome back to our final term in Year 1 and 2. We hope you had a restful Easter break and are coming back raring to go. Like us I am sure you can’t believe how fast the year is zooming by. This term will be no different. Please do note that PE is on Mondays and Wednesdays this half term as we are lucky to have Nick the sports coach teaching us on a Wednesday afternoon.
In Literacy we are going to be looking at the text ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry, this links nicely to our Geography topic of Brazil and also our art study of Romero Britto a Brazilian artist. Our questful RE journey this half term will lead us to look at ‘Special Places of Worship’. Alongside all of this we will be making preparations for KS1 phonics screening as well as KS1 SATs.
The first few days back Year 2’s have been excited to be learning about measurement and in particular length in Maths. They have been keenly measuring each other and also objects around the classroom using cubes, pencils and hands!
In RE we thought about places that were special to us, discussed what made them special, suggestions included; being peaceful, quiet, calm, happy, friendly, safe and exciting.
We have begun to look at the artist Romero Britto and have created some bold designs which we will work on again in our next lesson.
Children are enjoying using our ‘Growing Wise Builders’ chair in class- something Mrs Batey worked with the children on towards the end of last half term.
Children have also enjoyed the process of finishing off their creative weaving project from last half term with some magnificent end products.
This week we have enjoyed taking part in multiskills activities with Nick during PE. We took turns at being the traffic light, it was great fun waving the coloured flags!!
In Maths Year 1 have been looking at arrays. We have been learning how to make these with counters and objects as well as recognising columns and rows. We have recognised when we have rows of 2, 5 or 10 be can use our counting to count up.Great job!
In Geography we investigated photographs of Brazil to create a list of features we could see. We then sorted them into groups of human and physical features.
This half term we have introduced ‘Prayer spaces’ into the classrooms across school. In year 1 and 2 we have been given the starting point of thinking about the gifts we have that we can share with others. Children have been using this opportunity to blow bubbles to their friends while calling out their skills or gifts to friends.
In Art we have been looking at the artist Romero Britto who uses colourful pop art to celebrate famous people around the world. We used his style to create our own interpretations of King Charles 3rd. We are now working on our final pieces ready to reveal to you all by the end of term.
As a school we were thoroughly excited to be part of history and mark the coronation of our new king. We enjoyed a fun afternoon of face painting, games and stalls all while dressed in red, white or blue!
As part of these celebrations we created acrostic poems using the name ‘King Charles’.
Sports Day practice has been underway, children have selected their races and we have been taking time in PE to master our techniques.
During literacy we have been using dictionaries to help us find alliterative words for alliteration in sentences.
This week we have visited Holme Head House. We used the time to create some delicious Brazilian treats Pao de Queijo (cheese balls) and Bridadeiro (chocolate truffles). We began preparing carnival masks and also develop our vocabulary that we have recently been learning in our literacy text ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. Children were also lucky enough to meet a lady who comes from Brazil who taught us a little bit more about the background of carnivals.
Welcome back for our final term. I can't believe how fast this year is coming to a close!
We started this week with some work on parables. We read and discussed the parable of 'The Mustard Seed'. Children really engaged in the discussions around greater things coming from something tiny. As a class we decided to plant our 'Coronation Wild Seeds' in our Prayer Garden and are looking forward to seeing what grows.
Children have started a new DT project looking at mechanisms, this week we learnt how to make sliders. These allowed children to make a moving picture, a rabbit jumping from a hat and also a car driving down a street. They were all really fantastic at cutting with precision and paying attention to detail.
Year 1/2 all worked so hard this week despite the crazy temperatures, we finished the week with a little paddle in the EYFS pools. We were very impressed with their building skills and appreciated the opportunity to cool ourselves down!
As the sun continues to shine we decided to take our buddy reading outdoors, children worked well with their peers and buddies to read stories and improve their speed in reading. Well done.
Year one have begun investigating money this week. We have enjoyed comparing and sorting coins while getting used to values too.
In History we have been enjoying learning about real life superheroes such as Edward Jenner, Lilian Bader and William Wilberforce. Some children have enjoyed also exploring superheroes at home and have created their own stories and pieces of artwork. Super!
