Understanding Christianity
Understanding Christianity
The key purpose of this programme is to help all teachers support pupils in developing their own thinking and their understanding of Christianity, as a contribution to their understanding of the world and their own experience within it.
We aim to see pupils leave school with a coherent understanding of Christian belief and practice. Pupils from 4-14 explore the significant theological concepts within Christianity as part of developing their wider religious, theological and cultural literacy.
The Understanding Christianity Project identifies eight core concepts at the heart of Christianity that pupils need to understand. These concepts tell the ‘big story’ of the Bible.
The eight core concepts have symbols associated with them.
Children were asked to design their own pieces of art work to be added to a large timeline. The timeline symbols will be displayed on large canvasses in our school hall. We have been working on designs for the past week and Abby Kilfedder has provided us with her expertise to bring the whole project together. The project was financially supported with a grant by the Cumbria Methodist District. We are hugely grateful for their support. Thank you.
Year 6 children had some quiet, reflection time in our Prayer Garden. They were inspired when adding their own personal details to the Understanding Christianity Symbols.
Here are some examples of initial designs from Year 6 children:
We sent our designs to Abby who collecting different elements together to make a composition.
She then used the children's ideas to draw out some beautiful canvasses.
On Wednesday 1st July, all children in the school had the opportunity to contribute to the painting of the canvasses; it was a hive of activity in the hall. Thank you Abby!
On Wednesday 8th July, children finished the canvasses. We have some individual photos of those who proposed the original design and other photos of children who painted them. All children, who are in school, contributed to painting the canvasses and year 6 finished them on the 8th July. They were so proud! Well done to all our children!
Our wonderful timeline is up in the school hall. We hope that you will all get to see it soon!
